Raksha Bandhan, Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film, is currently in theatres. In the film, Akshay plays a man who has four sisters and is trying to marry them off. In a new interview, Akshay stated that the film sheds light on India’s dowry practices. He has also stated that dowry is similar to “extortion,” and that the practice is still prevalent in India today.
“We cannot disagree with the fact that dowry is very much present in India,” Akshay said in an interview with PTI. It’s hidden in the layers. Some refer to it as dowry, gift, or’sankalp.’ It goes by several names. Some request that the wedding be held on a large scale. Extortion, in my opinion. The father and brother are not particularly capable, but they do their best to ensure that the wedding takes place.”
Akshay described the Aanand L Rai film as “sensitive,” adding that not many films have been made on the subject. “If the film even works on 5-10% of people who watch it, I’ll feel like I made the biggest film ever,” he added.
Raksha Bandhan will be released on July 11th, starring Bhumi Pednekar opposite Akshay Kumar. Akshay’s on-screen sisters are played by Sadia Khateeb, Sahejmeen Kaur, Deepika Khanna, and Smrithi Srikanth.
The film will be released alongside Laal Singh Chaddha, an official remake of the Tom Hanks-led American classic Forrest Gump. Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Naga Chaitanya, and Mona Singh will star in the film. Aamir recently confirmed that Shah Rukh Khan will appear in the film as a cameo.
