In a tweet, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan lamented the death of iconic actor Dilip Kumar, saying, “An institution is gone.”
Fans and fellow Bollywood stars joined Amitabh in paying respect to the late actor and honoring his legacy. “An institution is gone… whenever the history of Indian cinema is told, it must always be ‘before Dilip Kumar, and after Dilip Kumar,” Amitabh Bachchan remarked after learning of the legend’s death.
“My duas for peace of his soul and the strength to the family to endure this loss,” he said, offering his sympathies to the late actor’s family and bereaved wife, Saira Banu.
He signed off by saying, “Deeply saddened.”
Messages of condolences have been sent from all corners. Everyone from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bollywood actors Ajay Devgn, Vicky Kaushal, Riteish Deshmukh, and others have taken to social media to express their fondest memories of the late actor.
Dilip, also known as the Tragedy King, died early Wednesday morning, July 7, 2021. He was 98 years old at the time.
A doctor who was treating him for his illness verified that he had died. Faisal Farooqi, the actor’s publicist, subsequently made the formal news on Twitter.

At 5 p.m. today, the late actor’s mortal remains will be put to rest in a funeral service. According to a tweet from the actor’s Twitter account, “Today, at 5:00 p.m., there will be a burial. Santacruz, Mumbai’s Juhu Qabrastan.”
Kumar was taken to the hospital a few days earlier after complaining of shortness of breath. He was hospitalized for the second time due to age-related illnesses.
