Despite negative critical reception, Ek Villain Returns has gotten off to a solid start at the box office. On July 29, the Mohit Suri film starring John Abraham, Disha Patani, Arjun Kapoor, and Tara Sutaria was released in theatres. This is a continuation of Mohit’s 2014 film Ek Villain, which stars Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor, and Riteish Deshmukh.
According to market analysts, the original Ek Villain aided in the release of its sequel. However, it must step up the pace and generate more revenue to become a box office success. The film’s opening day in India grossed 7 crore rupees.
Saturday, industry analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the first-day box office receipts for Ek Villain Returns “Ek Villain Returns capitalizes on the franchise effect and debuts better in single screens in large pockets and Tier-2 centers… Metros, particularly national chains, must gain momentum… Day 2 and Day 3 are key… Fri ₹7.05 crore. India business.”
The film collected a 1.5 crore net in bookings, which began on Wednesday, according to a report in Box Office India; it maintained this momentum on the day of its release, especially outside of the high-end premium multiplexes. In comparison, Ek Villain opened with a massive 16.5 crore. It grossed an estimated 170 crore during its run.
Eight years after the events of its predecessor, Ek Villain Returns presents a new serial murderer who targets women with one-sided boyfriends. According to the Hindustan Times review, “Two macho men – John Abraham and Arjun Kapoor – putting up their best action-hero persona and two gorgeous females – Disha Patani and Tara Sutaria – trying so hard to make sense of their characters – could not redeem Ek Villain Returns.”
