Ponniyin Selvan I, the magnum opus by Mani Ratnam, has set the cash registers on fire. According to trade sources, the film grossed over 230 crores worldwide and 100 crores domestically in its opening weekend. The film had the best opening of any Tamil film in the United States, grossing $4.13 million in its first few days, including premieres.
Ponniyin Selvan I was also the third highest-grossing film worldwide over the weekend with $29 million, behind the Chinese film Home Coming ($58 million) and the suspense thriller Smile ($36 million), according to a Monday tweet by trade analyst Ramesh Bala.
The film Ponniyin Selvan I is based on Kalki’s novel of the same name. It was released in theatres around the world in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. According to a tweet by producer Ramesh Bala, “Ponniyin Selvan I earned over 230 crore at the worldwide box office throughout its three-day opening weekend.”
The film had the largest opening weekend for a Tamil film in the United States, grossing over $4 million. Ponniyin Selvan I is the first film by Mani Ratnam to gross more than 100 crores and 200 crores. Ponniyin Selvan I is produced on a massive budget and had the biggest opening day for a Tamil film in 2022, grossing 80 crores worldwide on day 1.
Ponniyin Selvan I recounts the early years of Arulmozhivarman (Ponniyin Selvan), who would later become the Chola emperor Rajaraja I. (947–1014). The film’s sequel will be released the following year. Ponniyin Selvan I has an ensemble cast including Jayam Ravi, Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Sobhita Dhulipala, and Aishwarya Lekshmi.
Ponniyin Selvan After a decade, I marked Aishwarya Rai’s return to Tamil cinema. Aishwarya portrays two characters: Nandini and her deaf mother Mandakini Devi. Audiences and critics were extremely impressed by Aishwarya’s performance upon the film’s premiere.
