Saira Banu broke down when collecting the Dr Bharat Ratna Ambedkar Award on behalf of her late husband Dilip Kumar.
Veteran performer Saira Banu sobbed as she collected the Bharat Ratna Dr Ambedkar Award on behalf of her late husband, actor Dilip Kumar. She stated he was still here’ at the event on Tuesday. Saira and Dilip married in 1966 and had 55 years together until Dilip died in July 2021.
Dilip was recently named a winner of the Bharat Ratna Dr Ambedkar Award, and Saira accepted it on his behalf at a ceremony in Mumbai. She talked warmly of him, referring to him as her “Kohinoor” (diamond), and said that the late actor should also be honoured with a Bharat Ratna.
A paparazzo account recorded a video of Saira lovingly making sure she wasn’t covering her late husband’s poster while posing for photos with Union minister Ramdas Athawale, who gave her the honour. She subsequently sobbed when Ramdas Athawale talked about Dilip Kumar and how she had supported him his whole life. Saira said that this is why she dislikes attending gatherings since they make her feel upset.
Saira told the journalists during the occasion that Dilip is still near to her and monitoring everything. Saira stated about the late actor receiving a Bharat Ratna, ” “It should happen because Dilip Sahab has been Hindustan’s ‘Kohinoor.’ So ‘Kohinoor’ should undoubtedly be awarded the Bharat Ratna.” This time, she stated “Still, he is there. He’s not in my memories, but I feel it’s true that he’s with me every step of the way, since this is how I’ll be able to live my life. I’ll never imagine he’s not here. He is with me, and will always be my rock of support— my Kohinoor.”
Dilip Kumar, born Mohammad Yusuf Khan, passed away on July 7, 2021, at the age of 98, after a protracted illness. That following day, he was buried with state honours at the Juhu Muslim Cemetry.
